Book Summary

Hootch, the spotted hyena, wants to travel to new lands and explore far away continents, but his parents ask him to wait until he is older. Hootch suffers with feelings of unfairness, becomes angry and throws a “hyena” fit, howling and screaming as he goes to his room.  He has never felt so sad and yet so mad at the same time. Why can't he travel to see his cousins, Henry and Hitch?  His brother, Hip comes to console Hootch.  Find out the ending by ordering the book!

Reviews from our readers

"Hootch brings its audience to imagine the life of an animal that rarely makes its way into conversations between children and adults. Consequentially, it serves as a perfect lead into any lessons about the world being a much bigger place than it seems on a day-to-day basis. Use it as part of a Geography or History lesson on Africa, a Science lesson on classification, or just for fun as bed-time story. Hootch is a book aimed at fostering the curiosity of the young through one quick story. Recommended for children ages 6-9." - Alex Graf – History Teacher, Memorial Lutheran School, Houston, TX

"A sweet story about the protective nature of parents for their offspring, Hootch is a story about a hyena who wants adventure more than anything else.  Young children will recognize themselves in Hootch and enjoy the family conversation about traveling to different areas of the world. " - Terri Kroll - Reference Librarian at Oconomowoc Public Library

The pictures in Karen Meyer’s "Hootch" book are awesome, and there is a humorous connection between the pictures and the story.  I love the book. - AnnaMarie Pesaresi, BS, MA in Elementary Education
